Education Counseling

We meet families where they are on their journey and help to navigate their path forward with confidence. What resources are needed and where are they available? What evaluations would be helpful and who can conduct them? What should be requested from the school district, and when, and how? When struggling to solve current issues, it can be hard to also think ahead. With our experience finding both short-term and long-term solutions, we provide families with the necessary support to meet their immediate needs while also helping them plan for a future full of possibilities.

Special Education Planning

Just as every child is unique, special education planning means something different to every family. Whether it is a 1st grader who has just been diagnosed with Autism or a young adult with a learning disability who is preparing to head off to college, we help families face the immense challenge of uncertainty.

List of services:

Special Education – Helping families navigate the special education system to secure the services, supports, and placements their children need and are legally entitled to. Connecting families with private resources – services, clinicians, evaluators, placements, and more.

School Discipline – Advocating for students facing disciplinary action to ensure fair treatment and to protect their educational rights. Negotiating reasonable outcomes that limit the short-term and long-term impact of discipline.

Parent Coaching – Empowering parents and/or guardians by equipping them with the tools and knowledge to confidently advocate for their children's educational needs.

Testing and College Accommodations – Guiding students and families through the process of obtaining necessary accommodations for success in college and for admission and licensure testing.

Adult Disability Services and Life Planning – Advising young adults and families on how to plan for long-term needs, services, housing, and decision-making as children transition into adulthood.

Estate planning is especially important for families with children with disabilities. It's not just about preparing for the future—it's about protecting the people we love most and making sure they're supported every step of the way. For families navigating special education and long-term care needs, thoughtful planning can bring clarity, peace of mind, and a sense of empowerment. From establishing special needs trusts to choosing guardians and setting up secure financial plans, estate planning with an attorney helps ensure that your child's needs are met, both now and for years to come.

At Schluter & Hughes Law Firm, PLLC we use our custom model called Continuum LifePlan SM to help families understand the natural progression, a holistic approach that  allows for growth, change and the unexpected.
